Nation’s Top Defender Out For Season

The news came out yesterday that the University of Kentucky’s star center Nerlens Noel tore his ACL and will be out for the remainder of the season. During the second half with 8.03 left to play Nerlens chased down Florida gurad Mike Rosario to block his shot off of a turnover. Upon blocking the shot Nerlens rammed the goal support and fell screaming in agony.
Nerlens is UK’s star 6-10 Center averaging 10.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.1 steals, and the most impressive 4.4 blocks per game almost topping UK’s 2011-2012 national champion center/powerforward Anthony Davis who averaged 4.8 blocks a game.
Nerlens tweeted “A minor setback for a greater comeback.”OHS Student Ryan Johnson said about the quote. “I don’t see him coming back any time soon, he’ll be sitting the bench where ever he is next season. Derek Rose tore his ACL a year ago and still hasn’t come back.”
With a road game against Tennessee on Saturday UK will be faced with their toughest challenge yet. In Nerlens’ absence Willie Cauley-Stein, a 7-1 center, will have to step up to fill the gap that is left by Noel. Willie has had a minor impact but is still projected a late first round NBA pick because of his potential. He currently averages 20 minutes a game along with 7.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks all off the bench. Not only will Willie have to step up and fill the void but also 6th man Kyle Wiltjer who averages 24 minutes a game and 11.5 points.
Teneessee, 5-6 in the SEC, lost to UK in January by 10 points. However Noel scored 12 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, 4 steals, and an impressive 6 blocks. Take Noel out and UK would have lost the game statistically. Not to mention that game took place in Rupp Arena giving UK a home court advantage. Saturday UK will be traveling to Thomsan-Boling Arena for this rematch.
Local Wildcat fans opinons varie. Aside from the “Wait till next year” and the “I never said we were going to win two in a row” Wildcat fans have completely blown off the fact that their preseason #3 team has flopped. They continue to remeniece about the past 2012 Championship squad led by two freshman stars Anthony Davis and Micheal Kidd-Gilcrest. Former OHS Student and current UK Student Kathleen Kimmell said “It is what is it, next year we’ll be good.”
Kentucky began the season ranked #3 in the AP poll falling quickly to Duke, Notre Dame, and Baylor they dropped from the rankings only to reamurge at #25 this week the week they play #7 Florida Gators in the swamp. “It hurts us,” guard Julius Mays told the Courier Journal in a post Florida game interview “because he’s a big energy guy and he makes the game different for us.”

Where Did the Coffee Go?

Coffee is a world famous beverage. It’s a bitter flavored drink, and an energizing hot liquid.

Mr. Norris, the Driver’s Ed teacher said, “After a while you love coffee, after a while it becomes a habit to drink each morning.”

Students at OHS have multiple options around town to purchase their favorite java, from the international franchise Starbucks to the Crème coffee shop downtown Owensboro. Students love their coffee and coffee flavored beverages.

In the second semester of the 2009-2010 school year, OHS introduced their own coffee. This coffee was available for almost the entire semester in the middle or hamburger line. Since then, however, the coffee has ceased to exist at OHS. Where did the java go? Student Christina Hughes may have the answer.

Christina, a junior now, reflected on her freshman year, the year she was traumatized by coffee! “I was standing in line with my best friend whenever a student threw the hot drink at my friend. I, being the savior at the moment, took the heat and came out on top covered in the steamy liquid.” Christina suffered no major harm in the incident, however the scares were enough to burn out her desire for coffee.

“ Looking back on this experience, I can see why the school took out the coffee. It’s probably for the better, I wouldn’t want another student to go through what happened to me,” she said. Christina’s testimony stands a significant reason to why the coffee could have been taken away. However students are still asking the question “Why is there no more coffee?”

Brandon Johnson, a Junior, Said.  “I remember the coffee. It was hot and good like all coffee tastes, and it seemed like a lot of students bought it. Students and staff enjoyed the coffee, but I guess that was in the glory days of the OHS Cafeteria.”

Today, the coffee is unknown by the underclassmen, while the vague memory of it remains in the upper classes at OHS. One of our cafeteria ladies said. “The reason the coffee disappeared is most likely because of the mess some students made and it didn’t make us a profit. I do wish we still had it. I guess it just didn’t work out.”

“I wish the coffee would return. It was so good!” Lilliana Soza said.  Sadly we won’t be sipping our favorite hot java any time soon, but it was great while it lasted.

The Election Heats Up

President Barack Obama and former Governor Mitt Romney took the stage at Hofstra University, in Hampstead, New York Tuesday night for their second head to head match up. For those who missed the first presidential debate, president Obama dropped in the polls while Governor Romney pulled ahead due to the staggering performance of the President. The tide turned this time in favor of the President, although he was a bit shaken at the beginning of the debate, he soon recovered and proceeded by winning the hearts of the Democratic Party. “The President gave specific details of his intentions in this next term while Romney just kept rambling on about how great his 5 point plan is.” Alex Khan, a junior, said after watching the debate.

The CBS polls asked who won the debate, President Obama won with 37% of the votes, while former Governor Romney got 30% of the votes. The other 33% claimed the debate was a tie between the two parties.

Many students at OHS are split between the two candidates. Dillon Schuler, a junior, said, “The only thing Obama did was hunt down Osama Bin Laden. None of his other ideas were ever carried out!” Teachers have their own opinions on the election. Mr. Schwartz said, “I just want the election to be over so I don’t have to be bothered by the candidates commercials anymore.” Other teachers have remained undecided for the election. Coach Rowe in an interview said “I’m always pro the president of the United States, it’s just such a hard decision to make.”

While the elections are coming close the Electoral College polls state the Obama/Biden campaign has gained 201 votes while the Romney/Ryan campaign has 191. There are still 146 votes up in the air. And that is just a poll. Obama still holds a small lead over Mitt Romney and his come back last night sparked hope for the Democrats of America. There is one final debate next Monday night from 8:00-9:30 Central time. The debate takes place in Boca Raton, Florida at Lynn University. Be sure to watch and if you are old enough to: vote

It’s Game Day Baby!

Owensboro High School has won Four State Titles and has Eighty-Seven winning seasons in its football program. Six of these Eighty-Seven Winning Seasons have been under Head Coach Joe Prince. His record is favorable with victories in fifty-seven out of the eighty-six games he has coached. This Friday starts his tenth season as head coach.

The school is hyped about this opening DCHS rivalry game! We are anticipating kickoff as the clock slowly winds down until Friday night. The OHS Football team, coming off a win against Hopkinsville during their scrimmage last Friday, August the 10th, (The score being 32-10) is expected to be enthusiastic about this up coming game. Coach Prince said, “Last week’s win demonstrated that the team can do a lot of good things, however I do not want them getting a false since of encouragement because we faced a struggling team. I expect them to come out and play with enthusiasm, eliminate mistakes, and turnovers; if we can accomplish that then we can win this game Friday.”

The Football team this year is lead by Myles Walker (Running Back and Corner Back) and Austin Esther (Guard and Line Backer). When asking Coach Prince about these leaders he simply explained. “I’ve been pleased with their leadership skills; they are expected to give an effort, have enthusiasm, and a servitude attitude. I want them to help other learn what it means to be an OHS football player. I want them to help others become great football players.”

Prince says that his defensive team is young and Austin and Myles can really help out the younger players. He also mentioned that despite the youth of the defense, the offense should be able to get work done on the field and the special teams are good this year. Coach Prince also mentioned he expected the team to be excited about their upcoming season. According to the coach, they are there to win, have fun and play football!

Friday Night the tradition of champions taking the field at Rash continues with an imminent victory over DCHS. Let’s Go Devils! And, of course, Coach Prince had one final statement about this Friday…. “ITS GAME DAY BABY!”
